Abstract

The OAK Law Project undertook a survey of issues facing academic authors within Australia in relation to repositories, open access journals and traditional subscription based academic publishing. It looked at their awareness and understanding of repositories and open access journals, their perceptions and experiences when negotiating and entering into publishing agreements and what made them choose between traditional subscription based publishers and repositories and open access journals as vehicles for publishing their work. This presentation outlines the results of that survey and makes suggestions as to what practical steps can be undertaken to facilitate the growth of institutional and disciplinary repositories and open access journals, including the development of publishing agreements, guides to publishing and legal frameworks that balance and satisfy authors concerns about open access depositing and their commercial publishing interests.
