Abstract

Institutional Repositories are growing in number globally due to the Open Access movement which gained momentum within the last years. Almost all of these repositories belong to academia though. No pharmaceutical company yet has such a repository. Novartis took the decision not only to support Open Access publishing through institutional memberships to BioMed Central and PLoS, but also to invest resources in the development of a Novartis repository. OAK (Open Access to Knowledge @ Novartis) has been developed in collaboration with EPrints Services - one of the major providers of open source repository software. OAK is highly customized and does not only take care of the standard copyright-compliant long term archiving issues. It also includes a sophisticated review and approval workflow for Novartis scientific publications. OAK therefore comprises of two sections: 1.OAK Internal Archive: containing all publications from “Draft” state to “Published” state; audience restricted to Novartis employees 2.OAK Open Access Internet Archive: containing all final drafts of already externally published articles cleared for Open Access; to be accessed on the internet by anyone interested
