Abstract

The purpose of the Depot is to help ensure that all UK academics can enjoy the benefits of Open Access for their research outputs – in line with JISC strategy for UK education and research and funded as a national online facility as part of its Repositories Programme. Many universities and other academic institutions have already invested in a repository for their staff, but as yet this is not comprehensive and so for many UK researchers there is no current provision for open access dissemination of their research. The role of the Depot is to bridge that gap, complementing existing institutional repositories (IRs) by providing a repository for the interim period before every university has such repository provision – and simplifying the message for Open Access (“put it in the Depot”). In doing so, the Depot helps create a level playing field for open access deposit by all in UK higher education, especially when there are mandates by grant-funding bodies such as UK research councils.
