Abstract

Records management is an early stage in digital preservation. Specifying what needs to be preserved by institutions – as part of institutional memory or for legal purposes – can assist in identifying priorities within records management. Within an institutional repository records management can take advantage of developing approaches to digital preservation, incorporating appropriate metadata and recording information about potential need for future emulation or format conversion. At the University of Hull, the JISC-funded REMAP project is investigating these issues with a view to gaining a better understanding of how an institutional repository can be used to support records management and digital preservation. We propose to use a poster at OR08 to stimulate discussion of this approach and raise awareness of the potential of an institutional repository to meet the demands of records management and digital preservation. In applying an institutional repository to an activity that is part of everyday life within a university, there is potential for increasing the embedding of such a system and advocating its wider benefits to both administrators and academics.
